Driving across the USA is the trip of a lifetime - to do it in 5 days is a challenge but is easily accomplished when you break up the trip into fun segments:

Day 1: Buffalo, NY to Chicago, IL (540 miles). Chicago is the birthplace of Hillary Clinton!
Day 2: Chicago, IL to Lincoln, NE (524 miles). Its illegal to go whale fishing in Nebraska!
Day 3: Lincoln, NE to Denver, CO (488 miles). Colorado applied for statehood three times before succeeding!
Day 4: Denver, CO to Cedar City, UT (579 miles). Cedar City is the home of the Tony award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival!
Day 5: Cedar City, UT to Los Angeles, CA (439 miles).

Starbucks has introduced this new hot chocolate dessert drink called Chantico that's basically pure chocolate melted, heated and poured into a tiny cup. No milk, no boiling water. Very European. It's so rich and chocolatey sweet. It's definitely a treat that Ryguy and I would share.

Looks like someone with a big budget is trying to do the viral marketing thing. Instead of long tired marketing tactics though, they're buying expensive ad real estate on the streets of New York and London with outdoor touting the2headeddog.com.

What is it? Some claim a relaunch of MTV2 and after working for MTVN, I concur. They're out there enough and oh so savvy to pique interest with a curious URL and simple 2c graphic.

The website features 72 (so far) twisted, bizarre and often hilarious short videos with varied names such as Hunter Love, X-Treme Walking, Bread Hands, Bad Hiding Places, Mutant Disco, and Trash Talk. Actually, check out #72 Boy Band Beating. :)

We were talking tonight about how the world has become an Orwellian place. I guess that we had all assumed that an Orwellian world would be one wherein dissent wasn't tolerated but it is.

The creepiest aspects of our Orwellian world were:

A - The media's ability to disregard important issues (Genocide in the Sudan and even Rwanda years ago, looming environmental crises, widespread voter fraud in the elections, etc) while focusing on irrelevant non-issues (Nick & Jessica, David Beckham's salary [for our friends in the UK], Janet's nipple, etc).

B - The public's complicity and I guess complacency in this process. For example, someone said more Americans watched American Idol than the Presidential debates.

Suzanne said, "We've collectively written a new cultural constitution: 'We the people want fluff. We want light news about easy to subjects. We want friendly politics with simple cliches. We want fast graphics. We want platitudes. We want to be stroked and reassured'."

It is generally disheartening to realize that we live in an age where people have access to so much information but yet choose willful ignorance. Or willfully choose ignorance. Either one.

Someone at work today was 'disgusted' that there was an american network that showed only sitcoms at night. It was called ABC. 'Where is the reality' she asked.
I was thinking about that at the gym - you really could make a sitcom out of anything these days. So I did. I combined the 8 TV screens that were playing in front of the treadmills into TV sitcoms, and some are quite good:
weather girl and her weather buddies with shopping habits suddenly take up billiards on the side to raise money!
man attempts to go into space but stays behind due to his wife's ailments and his son's problems with wearing makeup
a 'feel good' show about a talk show host who meets a man while volunteering at a homeless shelter....but they dont fall in love until they survive a flood together, at which point they are caught on the local news as being 'survivors' and everyone back home sees them on the news! Including sally the donut-eating lesbian bartender who likes to pick fights with men!

So much so, that they blurred out a cartoon rear end on Family Guy. Plus, what makes it even more laughable, the episode is a 5-year old repeat. So Luv and I tempted fate, braved the roads, and enjoyed an afternoon of cinema. We explored Sideways.

Here's my synopsis, littered with some opinion and praise.

Teenaged and twenty-something men are less likely to appreciate Sideways than those in their mid-to-late thirties - at their peak and about to begin the inexorable slide into male menopause and X-linked baldness. Miles (Paul Giamatti) and Jack (Thomas Haden Church) are long standing pals - ever since being frosh roommates in college. Jack, a B-list actor, is seven days away from tying the marriage knot. Miles, a teacher of English to junior high school boys and an unpublished author, is two years post-divorce and in therapy. Something of a wine connoisseur, Miles takes Jack on a week's tour of the vineyards in the vicinity of Santa Barbara, CA. [Sidenote: Ryguy and I just traversed these same roads just four short weeks ago! Los Olivos, Oxnard, Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo, Solvang, Buellton. I faintly remember seeing the Windmill Hotel where the primaries hole up for a week. Plus, they stop at the same fresh-produce market where I inexplicably threw my sunglasses out.]

Miles sees the jaunt as a celebration of Jack's imminent nuptials and an opportunity to teach his friend something about fine wine. Jack, a sexual satyr, just wants to bed as many women as possible in one last carnal fling. To that end, Miles is the ultimate wet blanket, and becomes even more morose after he learns from Jack that his ex-wife recently remarried. Despite his friend's resistance, Jack finagles [Sidenote: Finagle - Such a Buffalo word!] a double date with Stephanie (Sandra Oh), a winery's tasting hostess, and Maya (Virginia Madsen), a waitress at a restaurant that Miles frequents and who, according to Jack's practiced perception, has the hots for the former. Jack's relationship with Stephanie immediately becomes torridly physical, while Miles and Maya, connected by a common interest in superior vintages, keep theirs relatively cerebral. In any case, the two couples, and Jack's playboy shenanigans in particular, launch a series of comic situations that kept me and the rest of the audience laughing out loud.

The scriptwriting behind this gem of an art film is perceptive and clever. Giamatti, Church, Madsen, and Oh are perfect in their respective roles. At one point, Maya delivers a mesmerizing monologue about wine's personal meaning to her that's both sensitive and profound and perhaps the best single piece of dialogue in the movie. The bucolic scenery is gorgeous. [Sidenote: Again, I'm biased as the sights, scenes, and picture-postcard views are fresh in my mind.] And the viewer may pick up a few pointers on wine appreciation. This is a completely satisfying production to be savored by both sexes and certainly deserves the awards, nominations, and kudos currently being bestowed upon it.

Sideways was for me a bittersweet commentary and character study on unrealized dreams and ambitions, lost love, the promise and fragility of romantic relationships, and the responsibilities and rewards of simple friendships. I left the theater with a smile on my face and, if you'd looked close enough, perhaps a wistfulness in the eyes from wishing that I was there with my Ryguy.

Good friends are hard to come by
